Reversing cameras have become a popular addition to modern vehicles, and it’s easy to see why. Having a clear view of what’s directly behind your vehicle can make parking, reversing and manoeuvring into tight spaces much easier.
If your vehicle didn’t come with a reversing camera from the factory, an aftermarket camera can be a great upgrade. Depending on the vehicle and the system you choose, installation can also be relatively straightforward.
In this guide, we’ll take you through the general process of fitting a wired reversing camera, from choosing the right position to connecting it to your display.
Before You Get Started
Before starting the installation, it’s important to remember that every vehicle is different. The wiring, electrical system and interior layout can vary considerably between different makes, models and years.
Your reversing camera and head unit will also have their own specific installation requirements, so always read the instructions supplied with your equipment before getting started.

Step 1: Find the Best Position for Your Camera

Depending on the type of camera you’ve purchased, it might sit above the number plate, replace one of the number plate lights or fit into a vehicle-specific boot handle or mounting bracket.
Try to position the camera as close to the centre of the vehicle as possible. Before permanently securing it, take a moment to consider the viewing angle. You want to be able to see the road and obstacles behind the vehicle rather than having most of the picture taken up by the bumper.
Some universal cameras require drilling to install them. If yours does, always check carefully behind the panel before drilling. Vehicle wiring and other components can be hidden behind body panels, so never drill unless you are confident the area is clear.
Step 2: Route the Camera Wiring Inside
Once you’re happy with the position of the camera, the next job is getting its wiring safely inside the vehicle.
Whenever possible, try to follow the vehicle's existing wiring routes. Many vehicles have rubber grommets carrying factory wiring between the tailgate, boot and main body of the vehicle. Using an existing route can help create a much neater installation and avoids making unnecessary holes.
You may need to carefully remove some of the boot or tailgate trim to gain access. A set of plastic trim removal tools can be particularly useful here, as they reduce the chance of marking or damaging interior panels.
Make sure the cable cannot become trapped when the boot or tailgate is opened and closed. Any cable passing from outside to inside the vehicle should also be properly protected and weatherproof.
Step 3: Powering Your Reversing Camera
Many aftermarket reversing cameras are designed to receive power when the vehicle is put into reverse. A common installation method is therefore to take the camera's power supply from the reversing light circuit.
In a typical installation, the camera's positive connection is connected to the reversing light positive supply, while the negative connection is connected to a suitable vehicle earth or ground.
However, you should never assume that a particular wire is correct based purely on its colour. Vehicle manufacturers use different wiring configurations, so the appropriate connections should be correctly identified using the relevant vehicle information and suitable electrical testing equipment.

Step 4: What About CANBUS Vehicles?
If you’re installing a reversing camera into a newer vehicle, things can sometimes be a little more complicated.
Many modern vehicles use CANBUS and electronically monitored lighting systems. As a result, simply connecting a reversing camera directly to the reversing light circuit may not always provide the stable power supply that the camera requires.
If the power supply isn’t suitable, you may experience a flickering picture, interference, warning messages or a camera that doesn’t operate correctly.
Depending on the vehicle, the installation may require an additional relay, power filter, CANBUS interface or vehicle-specific wiring harness. If you’re unsure what your particular vehicle requires, this is a good point to speak to an automotive electrician rather than experimenting with the vehicle's wiring.
Step 5: Run the Video Cable to the Front
With the camera mounted and the rear wiring in place, you’ll need to get the video signal from the back of the vehicle to the display at the front.
Many traditional wired reversing cameras use an RCA video cable, which is usually easy to recognise by its yellow connector. This cable needs to be carefully routed through the interior of the vehicle towards the dashboard.
For a tidy installation, try to follow the vehicle's existing wiring routes beneath the interior trim. Take your time with this part of the installation and make sure the cable is properly secured.
Avoid routing the cable close to sharp metal edges, moving components, seat runners or areas that become particularly hot. You should also take care around airbags and airbag wiring. The cable should never be positioned where it could interfere with the pedals, seats or other vehicle controls.
Step 6: Connect the Camera to Your Display
Once the video cable reaches the dashboard, it needs to be connected to your compatible monitor or head unit.
On an aftermarket head unit, the correct connection might be labelled “CAM-IN”, “Camera Input”, “Rear Camera” or “Reverse Camera”. The exact terminology varies between manufacturers, so check your head unit's instructions before connecting anything.
It’s also important to check that your camera and display are actually compatible with each other. Aftermarket systems can use different video formats, such as CVBS and AHD, and not every head unit supports every camera format.
Step 7: Setting Up the Reverse Trigger
Getting a picture from the camera is only one part of the installation. Ideally, you want your head unit to automatically switch to the reversing camera as soon as you select reverse.
This is where the reverse trigger comes in.
Many aftermarket head units require a separate signal to tell them that the vehicle has been put into reverse. Some camera wiring kits have a small trigger wire running alongside the main RCA video cable. Depending on the system, this can carry the reversing signal from the rear of the vehicle to the head unit.
Other vehicles and vehicle-specific head units may receive this information through CANBUS instead, which means the installation can be different.
Always follow the instructions supplied with your particular head unit and camera when setting up the reverse trigger.
Step 8: Test Everything Before Putting the Trim Back
It can be tempting to reinstall all the trim as soon as the wiring is finished, but test the camera first. There’s nothing more frustrating than putting everything back together only to discover that you need to access the wiring again.
With the vehicle safely stationary and the parking brake applied, switch on the ignition and select reverse. The camera should power up and, if the reverse trigger has been correctly configured, the display should automatically switch to the rear camera view.
Take a good look at the image. It should be clear and stable, and the camera should provide a useful view behind the vehicle. This is also the perfect time to adjust the camera angle if necessary.
Check that your reversing lights still operate normally and look for any unexpected warning messages on the dashboard.
Once you’re happy that everything is working as expected, you can secure the remaining wiring and carefully reinstall the interior trim.
What If the Reversing Camera Doesn't Work?
Don’t immediately assume that the camera itself is faulty if you don’t get a picture the first time.
If there is no image at all, start by checking whether the camera is receiving the correct power supply and has a good earth connection. You should then check the video cable and make sure it is connected to the correct input on the head unit.
If the camera displays an image but the screen doesn’t automatically change when you select reverse, the issue may be related to the reverse trigger rather than the camera itself.
A flickering or distorted image can sometimes indicate an unstable power supply, poor earth or electrical interference. This can be particularly relevant on modern vehicles with monitored lighting circuits.
If the screen displays “No Signal”, it’s also worth checking the video format. A camera and head unit using incompatible formats may not display an image even though they appear to be correctly connected.
If you’ve checked the basic connections and still can’t identify the problem, avoid making random changes to the vehicle's wiring. Getting the installation checked by a professional is the safest option.
A Few Final Checks
Before considering the installation complete, take another look at the entire system. Make sure the camera is securely mounted, all wiring is protected and nothing has been trapped underneath the interior trim.
If any wiring passes through an exterior panel, check that the area is properly weatherproof. You should also test the reversing camera again once everything has been reassembled to make sure nothing was disturbed while refitting the trim.
Finally, remember that a reversing camera is an additional aid rather than a replacement for your mirrors and normal observations. You should still check your surroundings carefully whenever reversing or manoeuvring your vehicle.
Should You Fit a Reversing Camera Yourself?
For someone comfortable with basic vehicle electrics and interior trim removal, fitting an aftermarket reversing camera can be a rewarding upgrade. However, not every installation is suitable for a DIY approach.
Modern vehicles can have complex electrical systems, and something that appears as simple as finding a reversing light power supply can be more complicated than expected.
