Motorcycles are light, easy to lift into a van and quick to strip for parts, which makes them an obvious target. No single product makes a motorcycle impossible to steal. What makes the difference is layers. Each one adds time, noise and effort, and most thieves will move on to an easier target.
1. Stop it rolling: a disc lock
A disc lock clamps through the holes in the brake disc so the wheel cannot turn. It is small enough to carry every day, which is why it is the most used lock of all.
- Choose one with a reminder cable running to the handlebar. Riding off with a disc lock still fitted can damage the disc and the fork, and can cause a fall.
- Fit it to the front disc, where it is harder to reach with tools.
2. Tie it to something solid: chain and anchor
A disc lock stops the motorcycle rolling but not being lifted into a van. A heavy chain through the frame or rear wheel, locked to a fixed object or a ground anchor, deals with that.
- Keep the chain off the ground, where it is easier to attack.
- Pull it tight so there is little slack for tools.
- At home, a ground anchor bolted into concrete in the garage or driveway is one of the best investments you can make.
3. Stop it starting: an immobiliser
An alarm draws attention if the motorcycle is moved or tampered with. A hidden immobiliser goes further and stops the engine starting even if the ignition is bypassed. Our hidden immobiliser cuts the engine until it reads its ID card, and because it is hidden, a thief has to find it before they can even start working on it.
4. Hide it: use a cover
Thieves often steal to order and look for a specific model. A plain cover hides what is underneath and slows down a quick look. Many covers have reinforced lock holes so you can pass your chain or disc lock through the cover too. See our guide to choosing a motorcycle cover.
5. Get it back: tracking and marking
- A GPS tracker will not stop a theft, but it greatly improves the chance of recovery.
- Forensic marking and registered parts make a motorcycle less attractive to sell on or break for parts.
- Keep a note of your frame and engine numbers, and photos of any distinguishing marks.
Good habits that cost nothing
- Park where people can see you, ideally in view of CCTV or busy windows.
- At dedicated motorcycle bays, use the ground loops provided.
- Lock up even for a quick stop. Most thefts take only minutes.
- Never leave keys, spare keys or the V5C in the motorcycle or top box.
- At home, park out of sight from the road where possible, and lock the garage.
Check your insurance
Some insurers ask for specific security, such as an approved lock, alarm or tracker, or for the motorcycle to be kept in a locked garage overnight. Check your policy, as not following its conditions could affect a claim.
